Welcome Back!

Welcome back to SKKSA in 2013. We trust that you’ve had a restful summer holiday, and are energised for all that 2013 has in store. This promises to be another exciting year for us, and we can’t wait to share our 2013 calendar with you.

Karate lessons resume soon. We encourage you to visit this website regularly to get the latest news and calendar events. We also hope to keep the website and its associated online presences (Twitter and Facebook) active as often as possible.

The first thing to look out for will be the 2013 welcome and registration pack. It will be made available for download in PDF format. You will also be able to receive a hardcopy from your club instructor when training resumes in your dojo. Our online calendar will be filled with the latest tournaments and training courses, and don’t forget to check out the photo gallery for photos from recent training courses (new pictures will be uploaded soon).

Wishing you all the best for 2013!

The SKKSA Media team.

Get Ready for the Most Exciting Karate Tournament of 2012!

We’re less than 24 hours away from the SKKSA Tournament 2012. This year’s tournament promises to be the best yet, and SKKSA’s definitive style of hosting KZN’s most exciting karate tournament is certainly evident.

The competition will take place at the UKZN Old Mutual Sports Centre tomorrow, 8 September 2012. The opening ceremony begins at 8am.

Logo

The essence of this year’s tournament is captured in the official emblem for 2012 (shown alongside). Energy, dynamism and passion are expressed in the colourful logo, which will, for the first time in our tournament-hosting history, be extended to Arena-wide branding.

Format

This year, we return to the innovative style of hosting: with information accessibility being key to efficiently running our tournaments, SKKSA will have two dual-digital screens placed prominently within the main Arena. Competitor , arena and general information will be updated live as the event progresses on these screens, including live footage from the six Tatami floors.

Visit our Facebook page for the latest info on the event: facebook.com/SKKSA

Introducing SKKSA ID

At the recent gradings, you may have noticed that all grading books (the white books marked “LICENSE”), were barcoded. This is part of our new project, called SKKSA ID. Each student has received a unique student ID number, which corresponds with your specific dojo (for e.g., students from Durban North will have the prefix DBNN attached to their codes). These numbers relate to your entry in our digital student records.

SKKSA has taken another innovative leap forward in streamlining our administration workflows with custom software written by the SKKSA //MEDIA team, that allows us to track each student’s progress in our organisation.

You will now be required to carry your grading books to every SKKSA-held training course (such as the year-end training course). This book, along with your unique barcode, will give you access to that event once it has been scanned into our software.

We have some exciting ideas about where to take this new system, including digitising Saturday trainings and extending the SKKSA ID to a digital web-based karate syllabus customized to your karate grade. Watch this space!

We’ve barcoded about 70% of all student books in the organization. If you haven’t yet received a barcode, please contact your dojo instructor for further details. It is absolutely important that each affiliated student receive their own barcode, as this will be the only way to access SKKSA training courses, gradings and other events in the future.

Winter Warmth Update! Well done SKKSA

Well done to everyone involved in the Winter Warmth blanket collection on behalf of SKKSA. We are proud to announce that we’ve collected 411 blankets so far – that’s 11 blankets above our goal of 400.

We couldn’t have done it without your support. Each and every blanket counted toward surpassing that goal, and we thank you for all the effort you’ve put into this programme.

The blankets and donations will be handed to East Coast Radio this afternoon. Watch our website for more on the handover later today.

You can see who’s donated blankets at our Winter Warmth page: www.skksa.co.za/winter.

Aspiring Black Belts Undergo Trial Exams

Every year, SKKSA takes a group of students to the annual Swiss Summer Course held in the city of Locarno. Here, students undergo a week-long training course under Hanshi Rikuta Koga, and on the Saturday, attempt their black belt examinations.

In preparation for this major milestone in a karateka’s career, SKKSA holds a “trial examination” a few weeks before the team leaves for Switzerland. This year’s trial exams were held at the Durban North Dojo on Saturday, June 30.

The team was praised by SKKSA instructors and assistants who formed the trial exam judging panel: Sensei Norman Moodley (Overport dojo), Sensei Sherwin Hooblal (Stanger dojo), Sensei Prinitha Dowlath (Durban North dojo), Sensei Vibhav Woodhaymal (Durban North dojo), Sensei Yajur Chotai (Amanzimtoti dojo), Sensei Rishen Ramsuran (Shallcross dojo), and Ibtesam Ebrahim (Durban North dojo). The process was supervised by Chief Instructor Sensei Aneel Dowlath.
