At the 2013 Awards Evening, Stanger Dojo won the Dojo of the Year Award.

This marks the third time that Stanger Dojo, managed by instructor Sensei Sherwin Hooblal, won this award, the last time being in 2012.

This year’s Dojo of the Year Award was selected on a peer-review basis, with each of SKKSA’s eight instructors compiling motivations and disseminating them amongst themselves for consideration. Thereafter, the instructors met to cast their ballots on who they thought was most deserving of the award. This process is part of our continuing efforts to make this award fair to all dojos.

Congratulations to Stanger Dojo on winning this award for 2013!

Our final event for the 2013 calendar was the Awards Evening. On Saturday 7th December, karateka across SKKSA’s 9 dojos were recognised for their achievements in karate over the year.

Mr Ishaan Ramlakhan from our Durban North dojo received the coveted Student of the Year award, and Yinaash Bhimma from Amanzimtoti Dojo was honoured with the prestigious Chief Instructor Choice Award.

With the conclusion of this event, SKKSA’s programme for the year has now come to an end. Thank you to everyone who supported us during 2013, and we look forward to welcoming you back to our dojos in 2014!

Shotokan Kokusai Karatedo South Africa joins the rest of our country in mourning the passing of former president Nelson R. Mandela.

We dedicate our final event on our karate calendar to the memory of this great man, who always placed the needs of South Africa’s children first.

Rest in peace, Madiba.

From the 29 November to 1 December, SKKSA held its annual Weekend Course at the UKZN Westville Campus Sports Science Centre.

Over 160 of our karateka participated in eight hours of intense and fun karate sessions led by Chief Instructor Sensei Aneel Dowlath and the SKKSA Instructors – Senseis Norman Moodley, Sherwin Hooblal, Niven Baldeo, Anibhushan Maharaj, Yajur Chotai and Prinitha Dowlath.

On Sunday 1st December, kyu examinations were held. Approximately 100 karateka undertook examinations in the White – Purple Belt categories.

At 1pm, the senior examinations began for karateka attempting their 3rd Kyu – 1st Kyu Brown Belts. The 1st Kyu examination marks the final time that an SKKSA karateka gets examined by Chief Instructor Sensei Aneel Dowlath – all Dan Gradings (Black Belt exams) are undertaken by an international panel at the SKISF Swiss Summer Course in Locarno, Switzerland.

SKKSA would like to thank everyone who made our Weekend Course and Examinations a resounding success. We look forward to welcoming you back to our dojos in 2014!

The 2013 Weekend Course begins this evening. Here’s what you need to bring to each session:

• Your barcoded SKKSA grading book, to access each session
• Your correct karate gi – including correct belt
• You do not need to bring any kumite equipment – mitts, gumguard or protective pads. The training conducted throughout the course is based on traditional karate, and no competition training will be conducted
• Water: the sessions are fully booked, and it will get very humid inside the venue. Bring water to keep hydrated throughout. There will be breaks between sessions and during the training.
